Some weeks ago I was invited to be an official blog partner for the Riker Danzig Newport 10K, which I was ecstatic about. I have a long history with this race. It was the first 10K I’ve ever ran back in 2012. Way back in May 2012, I had been running for less than 6 months (not counting the prior running I did years before) and been dating some guy named Ben Fleck (who is he?????) for about as long.
It must have been great because I ended up marrying Ben and moving with him to Jersey City. We both loved running the Newport 10K and the fall sister race, Newport Liberty Half. In every year since, I’ve been involved with the Newport 10K and the Newport Liberty Half as a participant (paid and comped), spectator, and/or as an official blog partner. These races have a special place in our hearts because the first home that Ben and I had together was right around the corner from the start/finish area for these races. Not only did this make race day logistics easy peesy, but the races were on our home turf and we had home crowd advantage. Our friends were also in the races and lining up on the sidewalks to cheer us on.
The Newport 10K is a wonderful flat fast 10K that takes you through Jersey City from the industrial warehouses to the pretty cherry tree-lined streets with brownstone houses to the Jersey waterfront with epic views of Manhattan. It’s super convenient to get to by public transport (Newport PATH station is feet away from the start/finish area) and there are several wonderful restaurants for brunch at Newport, nearby on Grove St. in downtown Jersey City, and on Washington St in Hoboken.
If you haven’t had the chance to run Newport 10K, you’re in luck because I have not one, but TWO, free race entries to give away. Originally I was supposed to go race this, but I’m going up to Toronto for work that weekend, so the race organizers very kindly allowed me to give away my own comped entry.
