Happy 4th of July, everyone!
Although fireworks are closely associated with Independence Day, here in New York City, we don’t have to rely on this holiday for our sole source of fireworks for the year. Coney Island has fireworks every Friday at 9:30 pm from the last Friday in June til the Friday before Labor Day. The show lasts approximately 15 minutes and it’s quite impressive.
PPTC offers a weekly Friday night run during those weeks. We meet at Park Circle, the southwest corner of the park at 7:45 pm, and leisurely run the 6 miles down Ocean Parkway to the Coney Island Boardwalk.
Last Friday was the first time Ben and I got to go on one of these runs. I wanted to go last year, but between travel, work, and everything else in life, it didn’t work out. Not wanting a repeat of last year, I made sure our schedule was clear last Friday so that we could at least go to one Friday Nights Fireworks Run.
It was a warm and humid evening, but having good company made the swampy run fun and the miles fly by. We ran to Ruby’s Bar and Grill on the boardwalk. There, a bunch of us ordered beer (cider for me!) and fries while waiting for the fireworks to start. We had a spectacular view of the fireworks. Ben and I were impressed with the quality of the show because we were expecting something much smaller. Instead it was a large grand show with several spectacular large fireworks.
After the show was over, we walked over to the train for our long ride back home. Despite the huge crowd on the boardwalk, the train wasn’t crowded at all. It was a great way to enjoy a summer night. We look forward to doing more of these.
