Sunday, Sept 22 is a BIG RACING DAY for the New York City Metropolitan area.
It’s the 20th annual Newport Liberty Half Marathon in Jersey City.
When: Sunday, September 22, 2013 at 8:30 a.m.
Where: Newport Town Square, 100 Town Square Place, Jersey City, NJ 07310 (near the Newport Path Station).
It’s a great local half marathon. It’s a flat fast course weaving through the different neighborhoods of Jersey City. You start off in Newport, then run through residential neighborhoods until you reach Liberty State Park. At Liberty State Park, you have wonderful views of the Statue of Liberty. Lady Liberty said, “Give me your tired,” but the runners stream on to the Newport waterfront where more beautiful views of lower Manhattan await them. At that point it’s a home stretch to the finish line.
I ran it last year and had a wonderful time (PR and fun). You can read about my experience here.
You can still register for this half. It’s only $50. It’ll be a great day. I’ve been told that it’ll quite celebratory because of the 20th anniversary. There’ll be an after party where the $3000 of prize money will be handed out to the winners, age group awards, and raffle. If you’re looking for a half in the NYC area, this is a good one to do.
Then AFTERWARD, you can head over to Manhattan to see the elites compete in the NYRR’s 5th Ave Mile. The elite women will start their heat at 12:45 pm and the elite men will start their heat at 1:00 pm. It’s really exciting watching the elites. I watched this last year and even got to meet Leo Manzano.
Yay! I’ll be out there at the Newport Liberty Half! I hope I get my sub-2 there like you did last year! It’s the first year since 2008 that I’m not spending all day at the 5th Ave Mile. I’ve always run it, or volunteered at it, or worked it, or something. But I really wanted to do this half. Definitely planning on stopping by the mile to watch the pros afterward!
Yay! Maybe we’ll see each other at the half.
