A New (Treadmill) Mile PR

This past week I felt that I had a 7-min mile in me. I was eager to test this out on Friday, but the unraveled shoelaces did me in. I decided to do another attempt yesterday because I wanted to exercise, but I didn’t have time for a long workout. I’m finding that speed work is an excellent way of completing a fast quality work out. I feel good for doing something productive, but I’m in and out of the gym in under 30 minutes.

Yesterday I hopped on the treadmill, ready for glory or die trying. As usual, I warmed up for 5 min doing a 1/2 mile run at 6 mph. Then I sped the treadmill up to 8.6 mph (6:58 pace) to run as fast as I could pump my legs for a mile.

Seven sweat-drenched minutes later, I gasped into success. I was really happy because 1) I did it and 2) I didn’t develop a side stitch until just after I had finished. One of my concerns was that I would develop a side stitch so badly that I couldn’t run because of the pain. Ben says that my goal of a sub-7 min PR won’t count until I do it on a track because a treadmill is easier since I don’t have to fight wind resistance. I think I’ll repeat this a couple more times on a treadmill before I attempt it on a track.
