“Labor”ed Breathing

Happy Labor Day!

I celebrated Labor Day by running a hard 4 miles. Ben is taking some time off his own training because of some sort of sprained muscle in his calf. Although he can’t train, his leg feels good enough to go on easy runs. His easy runs = my hard runs.

The original plan was to run 7 miles at a 9:00 pace. We started off too fast; the first mile we did it in 8:06. Oops. Ben quickly changed the plan to run 4 miles at a harder pace since the longer slower run was now wrecked. Plus the morning was really humid. The second mile split was 8:42. The third mile split was  8:37. The fourth mile split was 8:28. The total time was 33:52.3.

My side started to hurt at Mile 3 and got progressively worse after 3.25 miles. Ben was keeping pace and for a while I was falling behind. Ben motioned to me to keep up. The side stitch wasn’t hurting too badly, so I summoned up all the energy in me and thought of Leo Manzano’s kick. I sucked up the pain and steadily increased my pace until I caught up with Ben. He was a bit startled that I caught up so quickly.

My speed and my stamina have increased considerably since the spring. I remember gasping for air and being completely wiped out when I ran a 5K in under 28 mins. Now I can run 4 miles at a 8:30 pace.
